Ever wonder how your state or city ranks with the rest of the nation in the health and fitness arena? The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) puts out the American Fitness Index (AFI) once a year and this annual tool measures the fitness pulse of America. The ACSM ranks locations by assessing the health and fitness levels at the metropolitan level.

The ACSM takes into consideration the health and wellbeing of residents in addition to community resources available such as parks, fitness clubs and even state requirements for Physical Education – to name a few

Here are the top 10 and bottom 10 ranks for this year.

Top Ranked

1) Washington
2) Boston, MA
3) Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
4) Seattle, WA
5) Portland, OR
6) Denver, CO
7) Sacramento, CA
8) San Francisco, CA
9) Hartford, CT
10) Austin, TX

To be honest, I’m happy to see my hometown at #3!  I’d be surprised if it wasn’t ranked well.  Parks, biking/walking trails, dog parks, kiddie parks, lakes to enjoy – yes in the city – ah and the farmer’s markets!

Bottom Ranked

41) New Orleans, LA
42) Houston, TX
43) San Antonio, TX
44) Indianapolis, IN
45) Las Vegas, NV
46) Louisville, KY
47) Detroit, MI
48) Memphis, TN
49) Birmingham, AL
50) Oklahoma City, OK
